Order Description
This assignment REQUIRES you to view a staged or filmed version of A Doll’s House IN ITS ENTIRETY. At the end of your paper, please cite the version that you saw, including director’s name & year of release (or attach the theatre ticket). THE VERSION WE SAW WAS THE 1973 ADAPTION BY DIRECTOR PATRICK GARLAND STARRING ANTHONY HOPKINS AND CLAIRE BLOOM
For this assignment, you will construct a 600-1000 word essay that analyzes Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House both as a literary text to be read and as a performance text to be staged/filmed.
A Doll’s House is a commonly performed and adapted work of drama. In this paper, please consider the class discussions that we have had regarding issues of adaptation. How has A Doll’s House changed from the work you read on paper when you saw it performed? Is the performed work the same work of literature as the text, or is it a unique work of literature all its own? Please refer to specific scenes, lines, & elements of staging to explain your points.
This assignment asks you to analyze the drama via techniques of compare & contrast. Assess to what degree the performed version is both similar to & different from Ibsen’s written play text. Then, analyze the effects of that adaptation work: in what ways is A Doll’s House improved by being seen? What aspect of our literary experience is lost in viewing the play?
